Left and right-hand exhibit differences in the execution of movements. Particularly, it has been shown that manual goal-directed aiming is more accurate with the right hand than with the left, which has been explained through the shorter time spent by the right hand in the feedback phase (FB). This explanation makes sense for the temporal aspects of the task; however, there is a lack of explanations for the spatial aspects. The present study hypothesizes that the right hand is more associated with the FB, while the left hand is more strongly associated with the pre-programming phase (PP). In addition, the present study aims to investigate differences between hands in functional brain connectivity (FBC). We hypothesize an increase in FBC of the right hand compared to the left hand. Twenty-two participants performed 20 trials of the goal-directed aiming task with both hands. Overall, the results confirm the study's hypotheses. Although the right hand stopped far from the target at the PP, it exhibited a lower final position error than the left hand. These findings imply that during the FB, the right hand compensates for the higher error observed in the PP, using the visual feedback to approach the target more closely than the left hand. Conversely, the left hand displayed a lower error at the PP than the right. Also, the right hand displayed greater FBC within and between brain hemispheres. This heightened connectivity in the right hand might be associated with inhibitory mechanisms between hemispheres.

INTRODUCTION: Effects on strength performance and muscle activation in the contralateral limb have been observed after training with the ipsilateral limb (IL). Cross fatigue effects in the contralateral limb (CL) can occur at intervals of up to 48 h after a training session performed with the ipsilateral limb. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of a training session in the ipsilateral limb, on the strength and activation of the muscles in the contralateral limb also submitted to the training protocol. METHODS: 10 untrained men (mean ± SD: age = 23.7 ± 4.9 years) performed unilateral knee extension with both limbs in equated protocols, in two conditions with different intervals between limbs - 20 min and 24 h. RESULTS: There were no differences in the comparison of the force produced between the pre x post interventions with the CL limb, as well as in the activation of the quadriceps during its performance. These results were similar for the two different intervals between the protocols. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that when the CL member performs the protocol after the IL, the responses in the CL depend mainly on the requirement imposed on the protocol performed by this member, without influence of the training protocol performed previously with the IL member.

Several studies have investigated the interaction between acute physical exercise and cognitive performance. However, few studies have investigated this issue during acute high-intensity exercise. In the present study, we evaluated executive functions (EFs) during incremental exercise in three different intensities [below lactate threshold (LT), at LT, and above LT], measuring EFs performance, gaze behavior, and pupil diameter. Twenty subjects were familiarized with the EFs test and participated in a graded maximal exercise test on a cycle ergometer on the first visit. On the second visit, they performed the EFs task at rest and while exercising at three different intensities using mobile eye-tracking glasses. Our results showed that the psychophysiological measures differed between the conditions. Regarding EFs performance, during exercise above LT, the subjects showed worse accuracy when compared with rest (p < .001) and below LT (p < .001). In addition, the response time (RT) at LT and above LT was shorter than in the rest condition (p < .050). Further, RT was faster (p = .002) in the above LT than in the below LT condition. In addition, the gaze behavior measures indicated that exercise, independently of the intensity, improves the number of fixations with shorter fixation durations compared to the rest condition (p < .050). Additionally, we found no significant differences in average and peak pupil diameter between conditions. In conclusion, exercise at LT improves the EFs performance while exercising above LT worsens EFs performance. However, there were no significant differences in average and peak pupil diameter between conditions.

Many results in motor learning have indicated that relative and absolute timing dimensions are modulated by factors that modify response stability among trials. One of these factors is the combination of constant and variable practices. Although many researchers have investigated the combination of practice schedules, these researchers have used measurements that do not assess performance and motor response separately. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different combinations of practice schedules on motor response stability during practice. Participants performed a sequential key-pressing task with two goals: (1) to learn the relative timing dimension and (2) the absolute timing dimension. Participants were assigned to one of two groups: constant-variable or variable-constant. Our findings indicate an influence of the increase in variability over the practice in the constant-variable group. Precisely, the increase in variability of total time in the second half (constant-variable group) of practice was followed by the maintenance of the same level of cross-correlate between absolute timing error and variability of total time. Finally, our findings support the hypothesis that practicing in a constant schedule favors the relative timing dimension of learning regardless of the order in which the constant practice is provided.

Although the importance of practice has been evidenced in early studies of cross-limb transfer, the association between cross-limb transfer and practice organization remains unknown. The two primary means of organizing practice are constant practice (CP) and variable practice (VP). When the same generalized motor program governs the motor responses, VP produces better transfer than CP. Thus, we hypothesized that VP would generate a higher cross-limb transfer level than CP. We assigned 40 participants to CP or VP groups and conducted an experiment consisting of three phases: pre-test, practice, and transfer test. At pre-test, all participants practiced eight trials of a sequence key-pressing task with the non-dominant hand (NDH). After the pre-test, all participants performed a practice phase of 72 trials with the dominant hand, but CP and VP groups underwent their different practice schedules (CP or VP) such that the CP group practiced a sequence key-pressing task in one sequence, and the VP group practiced four different sequences randomly. On the transfer test all partcipants completed eight trials with the NDH 24 hours after the practice phase. The CP group showed better performance than the VP group on the transfer test, and we concluded that the effects of practice organization in cross-limb transfer are distinct from intra- and inter-task transfer such that the specificity of practice explained the benefits of CG.

Although the practice schedule and variation in incidental context have been investigated together, it is not clear whether just variation in incidental context can beneficiate motor learning. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of context variability on motor learning. We hypothesized the practice in a variable incidental context would enable learners to be more resistant to the effects of the contextual changes when compared to a constant incidental context practice. Twenty-four participants were assigned to one of the two groups: constant incidental context (G_CC) or variable incidental context (G_VC). During practice, the G_CC practiced a sequence keypressing task in one color and a position showed on the computer screen. The G_VC practiced the same sequence in four different combinations of color and position. Twenty four hours, the same contexts practiced on practice (SAME) was performed and immediately after, a new sequential movement in new color and new position (SWITCH) was performed. The results indicated that the G_VC showed better performance than the G_CC on the SWITCH condition, mainly in measures related to planning/selection process. The results were explained by degree of similarity among processing events engaged during different moments and by development of a filter of information based on attentional selection.

The primary motor cortex (M1) is one of the main cortical areas involved in motor learning. However, little is known about its differential role in the learning of the relative and absolute dimensions of motor skills. We investigated the role of M1 in the learning of the dimensions of a complex motor skill. Forty-eight participants practiced golf putting and were stimulated for 20 minutes with real or sham bihemispheric tDCS before acquisition. tDCS improved global performance from pre- to post-test. Only those with worse initial performance who were stimulated by tDCS showed a significant improvement in the skill's absolute dimension. No effects of tDCS were found for the relative dimension. Our results suggest that M1 has a distinct participation in the learning of the absolute dimension of complex motor skills, and tDCS effects are influenced by the learner's level of initial performance.

Learning about the relative timing dimension of a motor skill is enhanced by factors that promote higher response stability between trials. Conversely, learning the absolute timing dimension is favored by lower trial-to-trial stability. The mental practice may increase response stability during acquisition since there is a low possibility of adjustments made between trials. Thus, this study aimed to test the hypothesis that some factors that increase response stability during the acquisition phase contribute to an enhanced relative timing dimension learning. Our hypothesis is that mental practice shows less relative timing error than the absence of practice. A sequential key-pressing task was practiced with two goals: learn (1) relative timing dimension and (2) absolute timing dimension. Participants were assigned to one of three groups: Physical, Mental, or No practice. The Physical group showed greater learning of both dimensions than the other two groups. The Mental group showed greater learning of relative timing dimension than the No practice group. The results suggest that mental practice produces increased stability, which in turn promotes learning of the relative timing dimension.

Differences in motor learning can be partially explained by differences in genotype. The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val158Met polymorphism regulates the dopamine (DA) availability in the prefrontal cortex modulating motor learning and performance. Given the differences in tonic and phasic DA transmission, this study aimed to investigate whether the greater cognitive flexibility associated with the Val allele would favor the learning of movement parametrization, while the greater cognitive stability associated with the Met allele favors the acquisition of the movement pattern. Furthermore, we investigated if the genotypic characteristics impact visual scanning of information related to parametrization and to the movement pattern, and the level of cortical connectivity associated with motor planning and control. Performance and learning of a sequential motor task were compared among three genotypes (Val/Val, Val/Met, and Met/Met), as well as their oculomotor behavior and level of cortical coherence. The findings show that the cognitive flexibility promoted by the Val allele is associated with a better parametrization. The search for information through visual scanning was specific to each genotype. Also, a greater cortical connectivity associated with the Val allele was found. The combined study of behavioral, electrophysiological and molecular levels of analysis showed that the cognitive stability and flexibility associated with the COMT alleles, influence specific aspects of motor learning.

Variable practice promotes a higher level of motor learning than constant practice. The glutamate receptors, n-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) and alfa-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic (AMPA), have been associated with the changes in motor cortex that occur throughout the process of motor learning. Considering that, it is possible that variable practice is more associated with the NMDA and AMPA receptors than constant practice. This study aimed ao investigating the association between the glutamate receptors, NMDA and AMPA, and constant and variable practice schedules. Seventy-eight male mice practiced the rotarod task in a constant or variable scheduling, in two consecutive days (acquisition phase). Learning tests were performed 24 h and 10 days after the end of the acquisition phase. Variable practice was more associated with the NMDA receptor and had a greater AMPA receptor expression than constant practice. The results suggest that the benefits of variable practice are result of both the greater dependency on the NMDA receptor and the greater AMPA receptor expression.

Abstract The purpose of the present study was to examine whether there would be performance differences between external and internal focus of attention conditions and an online demonstration condition, and if these differences would be observed at a neuromuscular level through EMG analysis, in addition to traditional outcome measures. We hypothesized that under the demonstration condition participants would perform better than under external and internal focus conditions. We also hypothesized that demonstration condition would show smaller EMG activity than external and internal focus conditions. Furthermore, we hope to replicate the benefits of external focus in relation to internal focus, both in outcome and product measures. Six male participants performed a bilateral leg extension under internal focus of attention, external focus of attention and online demonstration conditions. Muscular contractions goal times were set for concentric muscle action (4 seconds) and eccentric muscle action (2 seconds). An electrogoniometer was used to record muscular activation (production measures), and temporal error was used to observe performance (outcome measures). Results showed that online demonstration condition obtained better performance than external focus condition and a reduced muscular activation. However, differences between internal focus and the other experimental conditions were not found. These findings advance in the understanding mechanisms underpining the focus of attention, such as proposed by Constrained Action Hypothesis.


Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar as diferenças no desempenho entre as condições de foco de atenção externo e interno e uma condição de demonstração online. Adicionalmente, se essas diferenças seriam observadas em um nível neuromuscular por meio da análise EMG, além das medidas de resultados tradicionais. Foi levantada a hipótese que sob a condição de demonstração os participantes teriam um desempenho melhor do que sob as condições de foco externo e interno. Também foi levantado a hipótese que a condição de demonstração apresentaria menor atividade EMG do que as condições de foco externo e interno. Além disso, esperava-se corrobora os benefícios do foco externo em relação ao foco interno, tanto nas medidas de resultado quanto de produto. Seis participantes do sexo masculino realizaram uma extensão de perna bilateral nas condições: foco de atenção interno, foco de atenção externo e condições de demonstração online. Os tempos de meta de contrações musculares foram definidos para ação muscular concêntrica (4 segundos) e ação muscular excêntrica (2 segundos). Um eletrogoniômetro foi usado para registrar a ativação muscular (medidas de produção) e o erro temporal foi usado para observar o desempenho (medidas de resultado). Os resultados mostraram que a condição de demonstração online obteve melhor desempenho do que a condição de foco externo e uma ativação muscular reduzida. No entanto, não foram encontradas diferenças entre o foco interno e as outras condições experimentais. Esses achados avançam no entendimento dos mecanismos que sustentam o foco de atenção, como o proposto pela Constrained Action Hypothesis.

Many studies have attributed self-controlled feedback benefits associated with motor learning to learners' greater information processing during practice. However, individual learner characteristics like their impulsivity can also influence how people engage cognitively during learning. We investigated possible dissociations between the types of interaction in self-controlled knowledge of results (KR) and learner impulsivity levels in learning a sequential motor task. Ninety volunteers responded to the self-restraint section of the Barkley deficits in executive functioning scale, and those 60 participants with the highest ( n = 30) and lowest ( n = 30) impulsivity scores practiced a motor task involving sequential pressing of four keys in predetermined absolute and relative times. We further divided participants into four experimental groups by assigning the high- and low-impulsivity groups to two forms of KR-self-controlled absolute and yoked. Study results showed no interaction effect between impulsivity and self-controlled KR, and, contrary to expectation, self-controlled KR did not benefit learning, independently of impulsivity. However, low-impulsivity participants performed better than high-impulsivity participants on the absolute dimension of the transfer task, while high-impulsivity learners were better at the relative dimension. Cognitive characteristics of automatic and reflexive processing were expressed by the strategies used to direct attention to relative and absolute task dimensions, respectively. Low-impulsivity learners switched their attention to both dimensions at the end of practice, while high-impulsivity learners did not switch their attention or directed it only to the relative dimension at the end of the practice. These results suggest that the cognitive styles of high- and low-impulsive learners differentially favor learning distinct dimensions of a motor task, regardless of self-controlled KR.

In aiming movements the limb position drifts away from the defined target after some trials without visual feedback, a phenomenon defined as proprioceptive drift (PD). There are no studies investigating the association between the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and PD in aiming movements. Therefore, cathodal and sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) were applied to the left PPC concomitantly with the performance of movements with or without vision. Cathodal tDCS applied without vision produced a higher level of PD and higher rates of drift accumulation while it decreased peak velocity and maintained the number of error corrections, not affecting movement amplitude. The proprioceptive information seems to produce an effective reference to movement, but with PPC stimulation it causes a negative impact on position.

This study aimed to investigate how different age groups of older adults perform and control movements in a goal-directed aiming task and the importance of visual feedback during these movements. Methods: Participants included 22 old adults, divided in two age groups: younger (60-70 yr) and older (80-90 yr). Subjects performed the task in a condition with vision and in a condition where vision was deprived. Results: In the vision condition, younger subjects showed smaller movement and reaction times, smaller radial errors, higher peak velocities, lower relative times to reach peak velocity than older subjects. In the vision-deprived condition the same results were found, except for radial error measure, where no significant effect for age groups was found. Conclusion: Younger subjects seemed to rely more on visual online feedback than older subjects and older subjects use other sensory sources to meet the possible deficits of information obtained by vision.(AU)

ABSTRACT The association between contextual interference effect (CIE) and kinematic measures has been little investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the CIE on velocity and acceleration kinematic profiles of upper limb. Thirty-two subjects (23,7 ± 3,3 years) were assigned to groups of blocked practice (GPB) and random practice (GPA). The task consisted in achieve three targets in three specific sequences as quickly and accurately as possible. The study was designed in acquisition phase and transfer test. The variables of performance were reaction time, movement time, and response time and the kinematic variables were peak of speed, relative time to peak of speed, and number of peak acceleration points. The main findings showed that GPA showed lower movement time and response time than GPB. Regression analysis indicated that change in peak velocity during practice was associated to the change of the reaction time from practice to the transfer test. As peak velocity is a measure related to preprogramming, it is suggested that central control was essential to the CIE.


RESUMO Pouco se sabe a respeito da associação entre o efeito da interferência contextual (EIC) e medidas cinemáticas. O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar o EIC nos perfis cinemáticos de velocidade e aceleração do membro superior. Vinte e dois participantes (23,7 ± 3,3 anos) foram alocados em dois grupos de prática: em blocos (GPB) e aleatória (GPA). A tarefa consistiu em acertar três alvos apresentados no monitor em três sequências pré-determinadas o mais rápido e preciso possível. O estudo foi dividido em fase de aquisição e teste de transferência. As variáveis de desempenho foram tempo de reação, tempo de movimento e tempo de resposta e as variáveis cinemáticas foram pico de velocidade, tempo relativo para o pico de velocidade e número de correções para alcançar o alvo. Os principais achados mostraram que o GPA apresentou menor tempo de movimento e de resposta do que o GPB. Análise de regressão indicou que a mudança observada ao longo da prática para a medida de pico de velocidade estava associada à mudança do tempo de reação da fase de aquisição para o teste de transferência. Como o pico de velocidade é uma medida associada à pré-programação, sugere-se que o controle central seja essencial para a observação do EIC.

Explanatory hypotheses proposed in behavioral studies assumed that less repetitive practice schedules, such as random practice, seem to demand greater cognitive effort than more repetitive types of practice organization, such as constant. All of these hypotheses emphasize the enhanced demand to memory processes promoted by less repetitive practice schedules. In the present study, we investigated the cognitive effort involved in random and constant practice schedules with an electrophysiological approach. Twenty-one male participants practiced a sequential key-pressing task with two goals: learning the relative timing dimension and learning the absolute timing dimension. Sixty trials were performed in a constant practice schedule (only one absolute timing goal), and sixty trials were performed in random order (three absolute timing goals). Two electroencephalography based measures of cognitive states were used: (a) task engagement (sensory processing and attention resources) and (b) mental workload (working memory load). The results showed that random practice induced greater cognitive effort than constant practice when task engagement was analyzed. Throughout practice, both task engagement and mental workload decreased more in the constant practice condition than in the random practice condition. The increased demand for sensory processing observed in random practice opens a new exciting field of study in practice organization.

Abstract BACKGROUND There is aconsensus that repetition observed in constant practice producesminimalbenefits to the transfer of learning. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigatein 3 experiments the effects of constant practicein transfer contexts. METHODOLOGY Participants were asked during acquisition phase, in all experiments, to press four keys sequentially with different requirements of absolute timing in a same relative timing structure. In the transfer tests, they were tested in a novel absolute timing criterion. RESULTS The results of experiment 1 and 2 showed that the relative timing structure was maintained only when the transfer required parameter scaling close to the parameter value practiced in acquisition. The transfer parameter that is far to the parameter practiced did not affect the movement parameterization. The result of experiment 3 showed that relative timing structure is disrupted in the transfer test when constant practice has high and low amount of practice. CONCLUSION Some specific aspects interfere in the transfer test when constant practice is experienced.(AU)

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The present study investigated the influence of audience on the sensorymotor performance in learning the hall of javelin throwing. The experiment was conducted on two separate days, each with a specific condition: 1) with audience (10 attempts); 2) no audience (10 attempts). The 18 students of smaller and higher performance were divided into two groups: disadvantaged (DG) and benefited (BG). The performance and state-anxiety scores (IDATE), the two-way ANOVA and pairwise identified interaction between group and condition, and GP worst performing and most IDATE and GB with better performance and no change in IDATE provided with the audience. In the heart rate, there was no interaction but the main effect for the condition factor for both groups. It can be inferred that the audience influences the sensorymotor performance may cause worsening or improving depend on individual characteristics.


RESUMO O presente estudo investigou a influência de plateia sobre o desempenho sensoriomotor na aprendizagem do arremesso de dardo de salão. O experimento foi conduzido em dois dias distintos, cada um com uma condição específica: 1) com plateia (10 tentativas); 2) sem plateia (10 tentativas). Os 18 universitários de menor e maior desempenho foram divididos em dois grupos: prejudicado (GP) e beneficiado (GB). Nas análises de desempenho e escores de ansiedade-estado (IDATE), a ANOVA two way e pairwise identificaram interação entre grupo e condição, sendo GP com pior desempenho e maior IDATE e GB com melhor desempenho e sem alteração no IDATE na condição com plateia. Já na frequência cardíaca, não houve interação, porém efeito principal para o fator condição para ambos os grupos. Pode-se inferir que, a plateia influencia no desempenho sensoriomotor podendo ocorrer piora ou melhora a depender de características individuais.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) on the primary motor cortex (M1) in the manual performance asymmetries in a manual dexterity tasks. The sample consisted of 28 volunteers, right-handed, men and without neurological impairment. The task (Grooved Pegboard) consisted of inserting 25 pins in 25 receptacles, as soon as possible. The task was executed in the pretest with both hands to define the level of manual asymmetry. tDCS or Sham were applied a week after the pretest, then the subjects were evaluated in the post-test. The results revealed that the effects of tDCS in M1 did not reduce asymmetries in a manual dexterity task. However, only the tDCS group improved the performance from pretest to the posttest (p <0.05) in both hands. Stimulation of the right M1 may have generated benefits in the contralateral M1.


RESUMO O objetivo foi avaliar os efeitos da estimulação transcraniana por corrente contínua (ETCC) sobre o córtex motor primário (M1) nas assimetrias de desempenho manual em uma tarefa de destreza manual. A amostra foi composta por 28 voluntários, destros, do sexo masculino e sem comprometimento neurológico. A tarefa (Grooved Pegboard) consistiu em encaixar 25 pinos em 25 receptáculos, o mais rápido possível. A tarefa foi executada no pré-teste com ambas as mãos para definição do nível de assimetria manual. Uma semana após o pré-teste foi aplicado a ETCC ou placebo, em seguida os sujeitos foram avaliados no pós-teste. Os resultados revelaram que os efeitos da ETCC no M1 não foram capazes de diminuir as assimetrias manuais em uma tarefa de destreza manual em sujeitos destros. Entretanto, somente o grupo ETCC melhorou o desempenho do pré-teste para o pós-teste (p<0,05) em ambas as mãos. A estimulação do M1 direito pode ter gerado benefícios no M1 contralateral.
